Located in the downtown district in Melbourne the concept for Frequency is inspired by Melbourne’s long passion for music. Melbourne is the live music capital of the world. For every 9,502 residents Melbourne has one music venue, making this city great for music lovers. In 2017 alone, greater Melbourne played host to over 73,605 advertised gigs and saw a total live music attendance of 17.5 million people. Music is at the heart of the city.

People love music because it makes them feel good. It has been shown to reduce anxiety, improve mood, promote better sleep, and mental focus. Music sets up sonic patterns and regularities that stimulates the brain, releasing dopamine.

Through various combinations of sound frequencies music provokes emotions of happiness, excitement, and nostalgia. Frequency will use visual representations of sound to evoke the feeling of music. The experience of a concert or hearing a song for the first time is one of a kind. This hotel strives to embody the feeling of music and all the emotions that come with it. Frequency is a retreat for users to briefly get away, re-energize, and de-stress in the way that music often is.

Reception

As seen from the parti diagram below, the shape of the interior follows the curves of the existing columns creating its own unique frequency throughout the building. On level 1 & 5 this curve is seen through the entire floor plan where as on levels 2-4 it is only seen in the atrium. This allows for guests to flow easily within the space and guides them to each destination of the hotel.

As seen through the lounge perspective above, the atrium extrudes through the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floor. The atrium acts as a go between using pink to transition to soft blue tones as users enter the guest rooms. Hues of orange are primarily seen on level 1 & 5 representing the energy of the spaces and the energy music has.

Master Guestroom

Each guestroom has a vinyl accent wall and feature LED ceiling fixture. The painted black brick and walls create a sleek and sophisticated atmosphere, showing off the original molding and trim work of the building. Black acts as a blank canvas for the hotel, making the accent colors and feature elements stand out.
